Eliza didn’t know what to do at first. When she discovered she was pregnant, she was all alone, not to mention underweight and too injured to hunt for herself. So she aimed to survive off of whatever scraps she could find, eating off the abandoned carcasses of other packs whenever she could sneak past them, only to be chased off once she was found. Eliza found hope in the stars, always traveling at night towards the brightest star in the sky. Her mother once told her that dreams came true under that star, and to always head towards it when she felt lost.
And this time, her mother was right. It had been almost fifty-six days into her pregnancy, and Eliza was running low on energy, and time. How was she to raise a pup, or several, when she could hardly care for herself? Her paws limped along, and her ears were flat to her head as she walked in the only direction she saw fit. It wasn’t until she heard happy barks from behind her that Eliza’s ears perked up, and she quickly shuffled out of the way to try and conceal herself in the bushes.
“Hello? Miss, are you alright?” A concerned voice asked, peering around the tree to the hiding female.
“I,” Eliza curled her tail tight around her body as she peered up to the light brown, much larger male that peered down at her. “I’m fine.” She quipped meekly, lowering her ears.
“Masson, who is it?” A feminine voice asked, hopping over the large roots to peer past the large brute. “She looks hurt.” A solid white female with bright blue eyes gazed at her.
“You do look hurt. Come with us. Our pack has medics, and we have food. You look rather frail.” Masson stated, taking a step back to allow Eliza to carefully shift herself. He quickly noticed the lump on her stomach and frowned.
“Oh, dear me. We need to get some meat on you if you want those pups to survive. Come on now, what’s your name?” She said, walking beside Eliza and gently nudging her to follow after Masson.
“I’m Eliza.” She answered softly, cautiously following the two other wolves.
“Well, Eliza, I’m Ankii, and that massive tree right there is Masson, our pack’s lead scout. I’m just a normal scout. I’m glad we were out here to find you.” She piped as they walked.
As they came to the pack’s den site, they wandered into a small clearing shaded by large oaks, with small ‘dens’ made from the large tree roots and overhanging rocks that stuck out from the mountain nearby. Masson brought Eliza to their Lord and Lady, who greeted her with kindness, and offered for her to stay with them, and even join their ranks as a den mother for now. Eliza thanked them for their hospitality, and was soon taken to the medics who quickly tended to the infected wounds on her legs, and gave her fresh meat from a recent kill.
Hardly even a week later, and not having much time to put on a lot of weight, Eliza went into labor. With a medic by her side, she gave birth to four pups, but three were born stiff, and the fourth was barely hanging on, and much too tiny. The medic, Rei, wasn’t sure if he was going to survive. But by a miracle, and Eliza’s determination to keep one of her pups alive, the little, rusty spotted pup survived the next few weeks. He did, however, prove to develop slower. He was a runt, and his tiny size worried the pack. Assured he would survive, Eliza finally deemed him as her little Samuel.
It took longer for his eyes to open, but they eventually did, and his bright green eyes stared at everything in curious wonder. He had a hard time figuring out how to work his legs, and it took him a bit longer than the others his age to finally catch on, but once he did, Eliza realized she had trouble on her paws.
Samuel had endless energy as he stumbled around the den site, getting toppled over by the pups who were nearly twice his size. He often got behind due to his smaller legs when the den mothers would take them out on adventures. Eliza worried about his small size, and often tried to get him to eat more. But Samuel remained small, but he kept everyone’s spirits up. He didn’t know what a stranger was. Everyone was a friend to him, and he had no qualms with talking to anyone and everyone.
But this paradise didn’t last long for Eliza. She only had about three months of peace before a neighboring pack declared war for more territory. The packs fought to protect their land, and war only harmed both packs. Eliza, peace and quiet, took Samuel to the river bed.
“Sammy, dear, don’t go where your paws can’t touch.” Eliza called as she watched her son leap about through the waters.
“I won’t, mommy!” Samuel chirped as he splashed about.
Only twenty minutes later, and Eliza and Samuel heard the sounds of fighting, and screams. “Samuel, come here.” She said, standing up and looking over her shoulder.
“What’s going on, mom?” Sam asked as his ears laid back, trotting forward to hide under his mother.
Eliza bent down and picked him up by the scruff, carrying the small pup over to the bushes. She set him down, nudging him into the thick brush. “Stay here. Don’t move, and don’t come out for anyone but me, okay?” She instructed, not waiting for an answer as she took off back to the den site.
She was too late to help. The other pack had ambushed them, killing the whole pack. Their alpha stood tall with a dark smirk, declaring this land as his before he saw the rusty pelted female. “No survivors,” he snarled, and Eliza took off running back to where she left Sam.
Without warning, she snatched him up from the bushes, and leapt into the river, swimming across with three other wolves chasing after her. Eliza ran as fast as she could with tears burning in her eyes, and her jaws firm on Samuel’s scruff to keep him in her grasp.
She managed to create a gap between herself and the other wolves by running into the thick of the forest, but she knew they wouldn’t stop until she was dead, and she could only hope they didn’t know about Sam. Eliza forced herself to press on until she came to a large field. Her eyes darted about before running into the worn paths of the hills, leaping up one and setting Sam down in the bush. Fresh tears formed in her eyes.
“Samuel, I need you to listen, okay?” She asked, gazing down at his confused features.
“What’s going on, mom?” He asked, perking his ears up. “Why did we leave? Is everyone okay?”
“My love, there’s some things I can’t explain very well right now, but I’m going to try. Remember when Rei told you that the elders go to live with the stars, and so does everyone else that goes to sleep forever?” Eliza looked at his innocent gaze, her heart breaking in her chest.
“Yeah.”
“Well, our pack went to sleep. Very mean wolves sang them a nasty lullaby, and you’re much too young to hear it. But I have to go hear this lullaby, and join the pack in the stars.” She explained, her voice choking up. But she knew the only way for Sam to survive was if she stopped those wolves from hunting her, and letting them assume the whole pack was dead.
“Why can’t I come with you, mommy? I want to stay with you.” Samuel pouted now, his ears folding down.
“Oh, Sam, I’ll always be with you. Do you remember the brightest star in the sky? That’s where I’ll be, always looking over you, and always with you.”
“But the sun hurts the starts, mom, please don’t leave. You have to stay with me.” Sam crawled onto her paws.
“Samuel,” she whispered, leaning down and licking his head. “Just because you can’t see something, doesn’t mean it isn’t there. Just because you won’t be able to see me, won’t mean I’m not with you. I need you to do something for me, okay?” She spoke gently, eyeing her pup.
“Anything for you, mom.” Sam said, staring up at her.
“I want you to find a new home. Find a family, alright? Live.” She said, nudging his cheek with her nose. “I want you to live, not just survive.” Eliza nudged him to the bush before taking a few steps back. She needed to leave now before changing her mind. “Stay hidden until the moon goes to rest and the sun awakens, Samuel. Then go live your life to the fullest, help others, do what you do best. I love you.”
“I love you too.” Samuel whispered as he backed into the bush, watching his mother’s form as she ran away from him, and back the same way they had come.
