PART ONE
Shoved back, slim elbows crashing against the back of the cage, a terrified yelp left Laurelie. Her almost glowing blue eyes darted around in panic before trying to huddle into the back of the metal cage, away from that man, that monster. She heard them growl at her that she was a monster, but the young girl did not understand. What had she done? All she knew was this place, this horrible place.
“Elie, Elie,” Jacob, her older brother, whined from a cage settled a few feet away.
Sniffling, she turned and tried reaching her slim hand through the bars, wanting to curl up on her brother’s lap. She was only three, and it felt like this hell would never end. “Jacob,” she whimpered, watery eyes staring over to the equally skinny lad. “I want papa,” she searched her brother’s hopeless face, a small tear rolling down her cheek.
“I-I know, Elie,” he said, reaching his own hand out to gently hold onto his little sister’s, twining their fingers together. “They’ll come back, I know they will,” he said, forcing hope into his words. He wanted to believe so bad that these ‘scientists’ would send their parents back. It had been weeks, and he knew how terrified Laurelie was without her father to hold her tight.
“Oh, isn’t this sweet?” A sickening voice cackled as it grew closer before kicking their hands apart, getting a whimper from both children as they shuffled from the walls of their cages. “You animals fake emotion so well.” Doctor Keiser tapped his chin, seeming to be grinning from ear to ear. “No worries,” he started, slowly crouching down by Laurelie’s cage. “I will heal you of this curse. I will find a way to cure all of you werewolves of your burdens!” He raised his voice, smashing a fist against the metal.
“Stop! You’re scaring her!” Jacob rose his own voice when he saw his little sister whimper. “Get away from her!” He wailed, kicking his cage with his foot.
“Scaring her? Did you not hear me? I know you have no emotion but rage, FURY. You feel it now, do you not? I believe you want to kill me, like the others, don’t you?” Dr. Keiser mocked, flipping the boy’s cage. “Now stay silent!”
“Jacy,” Laurelie whined once the doctor was gone, crawling to the bars of her cage and holding on. “Jacy!” She whined, unable to see him now that the cage was flipped.
“I’m fine, Elie, it’ll be okay.” He called from the other side, not wanting to flip the container because tears were rolling down his cheeks and he didn’t want her to see. He had to be strong, for Elie.
~~~~~~~
At first, the needles never bothered her. They were another thing to hurt, another thing to try and rip this ‘monster’ from her soul as if she were possessed by a demon. Laurelie liked this canine part of herself, though. It felt.. natural, like it belonged. It was a part of her, yet these men praised that it was unholy and dangerous, and that’s why she was in this lab. She was here to be cured. She was here so they could take part of her away and kill it.
“As one of the steps to your recovery,” not that she was ever ‘sick’, “we must fix your ears.” The nurse said to the five year old girl who was seated onto the metal table, chains shackled around her ankles.
Blue eyes widening, Laurelie shook her head. “N-no,” she whimpered, lifting her hands to her pointed ears. She liked her pointed ears! They reminded her of her wolf form’s pointed ears. Of course, hers weren’t as pointed, but apparently that was wrong.
“Oh, honey, you don’t have a choice. You have already been given the sedative. It’ll be painless. You’ll have normal ears by morning!” The nurse beamed, as if this was a good thing. Laurelie whimpered, but soon was drifting off to sleep from the sedatives.
She woke up, mind foggy, and head bandaged. Whining, Laurelie gripped her hands to her head, able to feel the now rounded edges of her human ears. A small gasp left her mouth, looking around in panic. No one was here to comfort her, though. Papa was still gone, mommy was gone, and Jacob’s cage was empty.
“Elie! Elie!” Her head jerked towards the door at the rough voice wailing her name.
“Papa?” She whispered before her eyes widened. “PAPA!” She cried out, gripping her fingers around the cage door’s bars.
“Oh, my little girl, my love, I’m coming,” his panicked voice yelled as he burst through the door and ran over to where his daughter was. “I told you I’d come back, papa always comes back, right?” Ricardo was panting, unlocking the cage. There was blood on his chin, but Laurelie wasn’t scared, she wanted daddy no matter what daddy had done to get here. Once the door was open, she threw herself into his arms, starting to sob.
“Papa, they cut my ears,” she shook in fear as she crawled into his lap, Ricardo curling his arms tight around her, trying to comfort her.
“Oh, my angel, it’ll be okay,” he choked out, standing up and taking Laurelie with him in his arms, starting to rush out the way he had come. “We’re going now, okay? We’re going to get Jacob and mommy,” he choked out. Laurelie clutched to him tighter, nodding as she cried softly, terrified of what could happen.
Cutting around a corner, Ricardo had to stop when he saw all the laboratory guards standing there with guns aimed at him and his pup. “N-no, please. Just.. let me put her down, okay?” He begged, slowly crouching down to place her onto the floor.
“Papa,” she whined, clinging onto his leg, watery eyes staring at the scary men.
“It.. it’ll be fine, Laurelie. You’ll be okay,” he choked out, crouching down to her level slowly and pulling her tight against his skinny body, staring at the guards as Dr. Keiser came over.
“Put him down. Put the girl back in her cage.” He waved his and in dismissal, turning once more and leaving. The loud pop made Laurelie jump, flinching as blood splattered her face and her father’s grip on her loosened. “P-papa?” She whined, blue eyes widening in fear.
“I love you,” he choked out, a red circle right between his eyes where the silver bullet embedded itself.
“Papa, don’t go,” she whined, but her words were fruitless. The man fell down to the side, blood dripping profusely from his skull. “Papa!” She wailed, dropping down to shake his shoulder, choking back a sob. “Papa, come back! Y-you promised you’d always come back!” She cried, her tears washing her father’s blood from her cheeks. Her slim fingers curled around the fabric of the rags they called clothes, screaming when one of the guards grabbed her.
“No! NO! Let me go!” She wailed, but her weak attempts to get away did nothing. She was weak. She was scrawny. She couldn’t do anything. But she tried. Little legs kicking, it took another guard to help hold onto her as they headed back to the kennels. When they got there, they took pity on the sobbing girl for what they had just done. So, in an act that wouldn’t even come close to taking back what they had done, they put her in the same cage with Jacob.
Jacob jerked her over to him and onto his lap, clutching her close as she sobbed for papa. He gently rocked her back and forth in his arms, fingers stroking her blood sprinkled hair before he started singing their mother’s lullaby. It helped calm down her shaking body, bringing her sobs to small cries and sniffles.
~~~~~~~
Days melted into weeks, which quickly melted into years, and they were still here, trapped. Laurelie was seven now, and had endured these experiments with no hope of ever getting free. Papa had never returned. Jacob said they’d see Papa again one day, but whenever she asked when, he hugged her tight and said she’d know when when they time came.
They had been separated from their mother for the past two years, and Laurelie had developed terrible nightmares. She’d wake up sobbing at night after watching her father get killed again, after seeing Doctor Keiser lash out at her when tests didn’t work. It was scary here. They all wanted to leave. Jacob begged to be in the same cage with her, to sing her to sleep with their mother’s lullaby, but they refused, and pushed their cages farther apart so the two couldn’t even hold hands.
Usually Laurelie would cry when she was pulled from the cage; she’d kick and cry, cry for her mommy and cry for her brother. She wanted their comfort, to crawl into their laps and cuddle into their chests. But these monsters wouldn’t let her. Soon enough, though, she was released into a room, her eyes shifting around the area nervously. It was.. empty. No windows, but lights hung eerily above her head, swinging slightly and making her try and skrunch herself up.
“Elie!” Jacob yelled once he too was released into the room, running and wrapping his arms tight around her.
“Jacy!” She squealed in delight, clinging to her older brother as if he’d be taken at any moment. “I miss you,” she whined, fingers curling into his shirt.
“I miss you too, Elie,” he whimpered, clutching his little sister close.
“Laurelie? Jacob?” The faintly familiar voice called from the other end of the room after the door opened and shut.
“Mommy?” Laurelie pulled away from Jacob, the two turning to see their mother. Grins flying onto their faces, the two didn’t hesitate to run towards her, tears of joy running down their faces. Their tears of joy quickly turned to tears of horror once they noticed the collar around her neck that was injecting something into her system. They slowed down when they suddenly realized this wasn’t a reunion. They were giving them a chance to say bye to their mother.
“Mommy?” Laurelie whimpered, running past Jacob’s horror frozen form and towards the woman who slowly sank to her knees weakly.
“My baby girl.. you’ve gotten so big,” she rasped out, smiling as her shaking hands touched her once little girl’s face. She hadn’t seen her baby since she was three. The poor girl was born here, never having gotten to see the outside world. “W-why do you look scared, mommy?” Laurelie whimpered out, shuffling closer to grab hold of her mother’s shirt.
“Mom..” Jacob whimpered, finally coming over to drop to his knees and also hook his fingers into the cloth of her shirt.
“My darlings,” she choked out, shifting to put a hand on either of their cheeks, thumbs gently rubbing the skin. “You’ll be okay.. I promise. Mommy is going to go for a while, but we’ll see each other again, okay?” She rasped out, tears shifting down her face.
“B-but,” Laurelie whined as she crawled into her mother’s lap. Jacob’s lip quivered as he sat down beside the woman as she started to sing to them one last time. Her lullaby quieted her childrens’ sobs, and they knew by the end of the song, mommy was going to be gone.
When the song ended, Elanor only had enough energy left to place gentle kisses to Jacob and Elie’s cheeks before she started to fall backwards. Jacob yelped, catching her and gently laying her down.
“Jacy.. they’re not coming back, are they? Mommy and papa?” She asked, still too young to quite catch the true meaning of death and understand it.
His throat clenched at her words, looking up to her before standing. Jacob grabbed her slim wrist and pulled her to the other side of the room, sitting down and pulling her into his lap, rocking her back and forth. “No, Elie, they’re not coming back,” he choked out, finally starting to cry. Laurelie choked back her tears this time, lifting a hand and wiping her big brother’s cheeks dry before cuddling into his bony chest.
“Never leave me,” she whimpered, big blue eyes looking up to him, a pleading look in them.
“I’ll never leave you,” he said, tears watering both of their eyes.
~~~~~~~
The laboratories had pity on the two children for the next two years, and let them stay in one another’s cage at night so they could console one another. But Doctor Keiser didn’t want to pity them anymore. It was time for the brother to see how strong he really was. Maybe they could beat the werewolf out of him with another?
PART TWO
Laurelie was used to them taking Jacob away during the day, or taking her, but they had started to put them in the same cage. They thought it was fine, but who knew what would happen? For some reason, guards came and took both of them, purposefully leading them down a long hall. Clinging to Jacob's arm, Laurelie tried to block out the disgusted whispers behind them. The end of their escorts' guns pressed to their backs. "Jacy?" She whimpered, blue, terrified eyes shifting to look up at her brother.
"Shh, Elie, it'll be okay." He said, voice choked slightly as he shifted to pull her frail form to his side as they went along down the hall.
No one said what they were coming here for, but Laurelie knew it wasn't good. She knew it'd be bad. It was always bad. Sniffling, she let her shaking eyes shift over the eerie corridor as they shuffled their starving bodies along. When they reached a set of large doors, the two men behind them opened them up and shuffled the two kids inside, following after.
"Good morning, my pupils!" Doctor Keiser mused happily. "I think I have another possible cure to you ailments," he announced, jerking Jacob from Laurelie.
The two made a soft yelp, Laurelie about to scamper forward to the comfort her brother gave her, but one of the guards scooped up her small form, smirking. "Shall I chain her up?" He asked the doctor, giving an uncaring look to the scared little girl.
Erik waited behind the door, tapping his foot in impatience, young face pulled into a fierce and frightening scowl. Glowing red eyes glared at the door as he waited for instructions. He'd been here for so damn long he just didn't care anymore. Do this do that, he could give less fucks nowadays as long as they fed him. But then again, he had been trained that way. Cooped up in a small dark cage with all those damn tests and experiments, it was only a matter of time before the young child had broken. Now he was only a pawn, a little piece to be moved around and toyed with.
He growled under his breath, sharp teeth gritting against one another. What the hell did those scientists want anyway? Why was he here? They were taking so damn long. He shifted his foot, the chains connected to his metal collar and braces that were clamped on his wrists and ankles and splattered with a rusty red substance clinking together from the movement. They had better hurry up before he lost his patience. He was so violent for an eight year old.
"Yes, chain her up down in the pit where the boys will be. I want her to see, I need to know the effects it'll have." Keiser smirked devilishly at her and Jacob. The two gulped at the were dragged down a pair of steps, where a door was soon shoved open, and they were hauled in. The men simply let go of Jacob, but one held him back, knowing how he got protective over his little sister.
"Whats happening?" Laurelie whined like a puppy, big sad eyes staring up at the man, making a slight twinge of guilt slip into his heart despite how much he hated her kind.
"You'll see," was all he muttered, snapping the heavy shackles onto her wrists and leaving.
Jacob ran to her once the men left and locked them into this weird pitt. "Do they hurt?" He asked, gently picking up her arms to look at the shackles.
"They're heavy, Jacob," she sniffled, confused. Why was she chained up? What was going to happen to Jacob?
Keiser had gone down to the other lad, his smirk never dying. "We need you to fight that boy out there until one of you die. Don't hurt the girl for now, she's just there to watch. Don't even pay her any mind, she's just a distraction," a small laugh left his lips before snapping his fingers. "Unchain him and send him in."
The two nearby men nodded and rushed forward to do as they were told.
Erik looked up at the Boss with blank, empty eyes. He merely nodded at the orders and waited until he was unchained. The collars and braces were left on, but the chains were gone. He shoved the door open then and entered the area where the other two kids were. His eyes remained narrowed, along with his scowl. He stopped a meter or so away from the boy and girl. Huh, both were older, but there were equally as starved. Erik adjusted his footing, hands shoved in his ripped trousers pockets, though the rest of him was bare. He growled low, the challenge direct and clear. His inner wolf shifted and snarled at the opposing male, teeth snapping.
Jacob's attention shot to the sudden door opening, stepping in front of Laurelie to the sight of a younger kid. He had never seen this kid before. He hardly ever saw others. "Who are you?" Jacob asked, confused. Though at the shifting form and the snarling, he got the hint.
"No, Jacob, no," Laurelie whimpered, trying to pull forward to get to her big brother but failing.
"It's going to be okay, Laurelie," he said gently before lifting his hands up and taking a few steps from his sister in hopes of taking his attention away. "Calm down, I don't want to fight," Jacob returned a small growl. He wasn't a good fighter. They didn't teach him to fight. But he would to protect his sister to the very end.
"Jacy!" She whined, trying to tug at the shackles on her wrists to scamper over to her brother, but it wasn't working. Instead she was hurting herself, the metal biting into her wrists and drawing blood.
Erik scoffed at the boy when he said he didn't want to fight. Well that was too damn bad now wasn't it? He started to circle both kids, glowing crimson eyes narrowed. His lips curled back to reveal blood stained teeth, silver fur also dyed in certain spots with the same red substance. Suddenly in a quick zig-zag movement he launched at the boy, claws outstretched and ready to tackle the boy, jaws open to clamp down on whatever was unfortunate enough to get in between them. He was going to win. He would not die. He refused to die.
As the other male started circling, Jacob felt the dread well up into his stomach, heart picking up a bit in his chest. When the red and silver canine launched towards him, Jacob quickly morphed into his own wolf form. His white fur was corset from his malnourished life, and soon his own blood tainted his leg as he was tackled. Jacob tried kicking away, snapping his jaws up at the other male to try and snag his shoulder. He didn't want Elie to see this, not something else to ruin her forever. Ears pinning back, he also tried to twist around a bit, not wanting to loose either. He had to look after Elie. Who would do that if he couldn't?
"Please, don't hurt him!" She pleaded, dropping onto her knees since she was chained to the wall. Her blue eyes were once again pleading, body shaking in horror as she watched this stranger jump onto her brother.
Erik snarled when he successfully tackled the male. His claws sank into fur and flesh as he was about to snap at the boy's throat. But then the boy's teeth latched onto his shoulder and he growled at him. But now he had the upper hand. He snapped his head to the boy's muzzle and his jaws were ready to snap down on the boy's muzzle, teeth begging to sink into flesh and taste blood. Sweet sweet blood. He vaguely heard the female, but he ignored her like he had been told to do.
Since he had managed to get his teeth hooked onto the younger male's shoulder, Jacob tried sinking his teeth in harder and shaking his head. He was too busy concentrating on how nasty it was to have another werewolf's flesh in his teeth that be didn't notice when the teeth sunk into his muzzle until it started hurting. Jacob, with a stifled yelp, tried pulling up his back legs to aim kicks and scratches to his underbelly.
Erik grinned wolfishly in triumph when he felt his teeth successfully sink into the wolf's muzzle. Feeling the scratches and kicks to his belly only urged him to clamp his teeth harder into the muzzle. With strength only built up from the years of forcing himself to work he tried to throw the other wolf into the wall, his mind zeroing on taking this wolf down and for good. He could feel his stomach bleeding from the scratches and he winced at the pain, but forced himself to push it aside. If he showed any weakness, he will be punished severely by the boss.
He tried holding on to the male's shoulder even as the jaws were clutched onto his snout, but the jerking sent him flying into the other wall, a yelp leaving his throat. A small grunt also managed to slip from his mouth to the wall slamming against him. Jacob got to his paws as quickly as he could, snarling at the younger male. He had to keep him from Laurelie - he didn't know he had orders to carry out. So, Jacob ran forward, sloppily snapping his jaws at his chest to try and grab hold of something, anything. Maybe he could just get them both to wear out. Maybe Keiser wouldn't let this get too far. He could only hope at this point, but he had the dreading feeling in the pit of his stomach this wasn't going to end well.
Erik's fur was all raised and sharp as he snarled at the other wolf. He licked his own muzzle, wiping the crimson life force off his face. When the wolf ran at him he ran forward as well, jaws snapping as they crashed into each other, snapping and clawing and biting at anything they could reach. Snarls and growls filled the air as the two giant beasts fought each other. But Erik was starting to change his plans. This was working perfectly. Now he just had to give the wolf a wound that made it seem like he was dead, then he'd be home free. Erik's done this many times without the Boss knowing, he could certainly do it again. He had to protect his own people after all. Hah, and they thought they had beaten him into submission. Dumbass scientists, all of them. Now to get to the area on the other wolf.
Laurelie watched in horror as the two wolves fought, jerking her tiny wrists against the shackles as she pleaded with whatever god might be out there to spare her brother. He was all she had left. "Jacob," she whined as she watched him fight against the brute. She knew Jacob had never fought another wolf. He was going on instinct, and that scared her. This wolf clearly knew what he was doing, Jacob didn't! With tears dribbling down her cheeks, the emotional turmoil within her body made her morph without wanting to, ending up as the dainty little white pup, ribs visible under her unkept fur. "Please," she pleaded, but since her wrists were so skinny, the shackles managed to even stay on her frontal legs, but Laurelie kept pushing towards the two, wanting to help her brother, wanting to end this nightmare.
Jacob, trying to last as long as he could, tried to rear up, but hearing the whimpers of his little, terrified sister made him pause, looking over to her as he tried to use a weak leg to hold back the other male. "It's okay, Laurelie! Close your eyes!" He yelped over to her. Why did they have to bring her here? Why were they so cruel to let the young girl watch her whole family suffer, and then also suffer their abuse herself?
Erik glanced at the girl that was begging please. His heart briefly ached, and for a brief moment his crimson eyes softened. But when the wolf turned to face the girl, he took his chance. He ran forward as silently as he could before crouching down and clamping his jaws on the other's throat. He had to be quick and precise. Not too deep, or else the other wolf will die, and not too shallow, or there wouldn't be enough blood to make it look fake. He twisted the neck slightly, not enough to break anything, and made a subtle twitch in his back right ankle that made a loud cracking sound. He had broken his own ankle to make it sound like he had broken the other wolf's dead. He dropped the wolf, crouching over him like he was protecting his prey when in reality he just needed to whisper in the other wolf's ear. "You're free..." He whispered. When the scientists came for the wolf Erik stepped back, forcing himself to walk normally on his broken ankle. He shifted back into a human, form littered with wounds, his stomach the worst. If anyone questioned his ankle he'd just say it had broken during the fight. But everything worked out now.
Before he could even turn back to the other wolf, he felt the jaws latch onto his neck, and for a moment he tried kicking against the wolf in fear. As his neck was ripped into and he was dropped, Jacob sputtered a bit of blood, able to hear the cry of Laurelie, "I'm sorry, Elie," he sputtered to her, unsure if he would make it through or not. Hearing the words whispered into his ear, he got the hint to play dead. "But Elie," he muttered, looking to where the white girl was trying to pull towards him. But.. maybe he could come back for her. They'd just throw his body out, right? He'd come back for her. He just.. had to play dead, no matter how much it hurt either of them.
Laurelie ripped her paws from the shackles as the scientists came in to take him away, fleeing to his side and tucking her small head under his arms. "D-don't go, Jacob please," she whimpered, trying to lick the blood from his neck. "You'll be okay, please, please," she pleaded, heart breaking in her chest. Her bright blue eyes were slowly dimming, which stopped the scientists from ripping her away at first as she pulled her head away, trying to lick his snout to wake him up. "Don't leave me," she whimpered, blue eyes fading to brown as she tried hopelessly to get her brother's attention. His heart ached at her words, but this might be hid chance to get her out too.
As her scruff was suddenly snatched up, Laurelie cried out, trying to pull towards her brother's 'dead' body. "Someone take this mutt out of here," the man who picked her up said, shoving her into the arms of one of the guards.
"Yes, sir!" The man said, leaving with the sobbing pup still weakly struggling to get away.
"Very good, Erik." Keiser chuckled before motioning to the body. "Someone go through that over the edge: he'll be a message to the banished down below that we're still in control." A few of the men nodded before picking up the 'dead' wolf and leaving. "Now, Erik, lets go get you something to eat back in your own cage," he commanded, motioning towards their path back to Erik's cell.
Erik stood there motionlessly, watching with dead eyes. He had become quite the little actor now a days. Hearing his name and the praise he said nothing, just giving a curt nod. At the mention of food he nodded and turned, walking to his own cell. He walked into it and waited for the food, ignoring the burns and stings from his own wounds which would heal eventually. They wouldn't try to heal him, he already knew. What were they going to do to the girl now though, he wondered.
The guard took the small wolf back into one of the lab rooms, passing her off to one of the nurses, who took the girl and carelessly dropped her onto the table. "Change back," the woman snapped, but Laurelie simply crouched down in fear and took a few shuffled steps backwards. "Fine." The woman said, going to a drawer and pulling out a syringe full of green liquid.
She barked, quickly changing back into her human form to avoid the needle.
"Good, girl, now get dressed," the woman mused, putting the syringe down and dropping old clothes onto the table top. Laurelie quickly shuffled into the new clothes, now brown eyes watching the woman. She was stuck in the room for a while as they ran tests, trying to figure out what happened - in scientific terms - to her glowing blue eyes.
Tired, scared, and broken hearted, she was shuffled down the hall after the long day of needles and tests. Lifting a hand, she wiped her tiny nose, about to turn down the corridor that led to her cage, but the man shoved her along. She whimpered, unsure of where they were taking her now as they headed away from the only place she had ever lived: in that cage.
She was led down and through the lab, her big brown eyes looking around in fear. Before she even realized it, she was being shoved into a new cage, and two plates of food were carelessly thrown in behind her. Being shoved, she had hit the rough bottom of the cell with a whimper, looking up to the cage door. Why was she in here? As a haunting scent caught her nose's attention, she quickly looked over to the boy who had killed her brother, gasping as she quickly stumbled back and shoved herself into a corner. "P-please don't hurt me," she whined, bony legs tucking up to her thin body as she cowered in the corner. Did they want him to kill her, too?
Erik had been waiting for his food, sitting in one corner of the room. Then the girl was shoved into his cell. His brows furrowed in confusion. Why did they put her into his cell? He watched her with those empty red eyes. He had been chained again, just like an animal would. Sighing at her whining he shakily stood up and limped towards the food. Taking the two plates he pushed both plates of food towards her and went back to his corner, sitting down. Blood was still trickling down his wounds, one hand covering his ripped stomach to try and staunch the blood flow, the crimson pooling around him. He carefully moved his ankle, the joint bruised and purple and swollen.
When he got up, Laurelie shoved herself tighter into the corner, eyes wanting to water up in fear, but finding no more tears. Her once bright blue eyes that were now a dull, scared light brown watched him limp towards the food, thinking he'd eat, but instead the food was pushed towards her, both plates. Yes, she was hungry, but she also was scared now. Biting into her lip, she tried shuffling more into her corner, watching the bloody boy who looked somewhere around her age, even though she was always naturally smaller. Gulping, Elie shuffled forward slightly on her hands and knees, sore from all the testing after her eyes turned brown. She gently pulled one plate of food towards herself, but pushed the other away and towards the boy. She had.. a faint understanding that what he had done was because of the scientists, but she was scared he might turn on her, and all she could see right now was he brother's limp body with the bright red blood leaking from his neck. The thought made her little body shake, knowing she'd have night terrors tonight, again. But this time mommy nor Jacob were here to cradle her and sing her the lullaby, meaning she'd be all alone for once except for the other kid of course. Why did they want her in here, anyways? She wanted to go back to her cage. Looking down to her plate of food, she suddenly felt sick. She had nothing in her stomach to be sick over, but just the thought of eating after that made her want to throw up. Usually she didn't eat after something bad like this, and those mean nurses would force feed her by putting that tube down her throat. That always hurt, and made her gag.
Erik watched the girl from his peripheral vision as she just sat there. His expression was blank, but on the inside he was curious about the girl. She reminded him of... No, he couldn't think about that. Hearing the scraping sound of a place being pushed towards him he glanced at it, then at her. He frowned and just stared at her for a long time. Eventually he pushed the plate back to her. "Eat. You need to eat." His voice was raspy and weak, like he hadn't used it in a long time, not to mention damaged from screaming.
Laurelie let her fingers gently prod at the familiar, old food on the plate, eyes shifting over the contents of it before hearing the other plate getting pushed over to her once more. She shook her head, lifting a hand to tuck her long hair behind her once pointed ears. Without her glowing blue eyes, or her pointed ears, she looked like any normal human child, her outward identity as a werewolf taken. "N-no, you need to eat too," she uttered softly, a slight shake in her voice. Laurelie hardly picked up a piece of the fully cooked meat. They were small servings, but they refused to feed them anything raw in hopes of taking away the desire to hunt. Elie brought the small bit she pulled off and put it in her mouth, but there was a clear desire not to eat. She was starving, but she didn't feel like eating. She wanted to curl up in the corner and wait until she was with her family again. They said they'd see each other again, didn't they? But when would that be? When would papa come back? Mommy? Jacob? Her attention shifted to where the scientists left, eyes running along the door that had brought her into this place, pondering for a moment before forcing herself to swallow the small amount of meat in her mouth.
Erik growled slightly, getting a little irritated, before taking a deep, quiet breath. He had to calm down, he didn't want to snap at her. "Just eat it." He grumbled, turning away to curl up in his corner.
Watching as he turned away and curled up into his corner, Laurelie opened her mouth to protest, but she fell silent. She couldn't eat this much, anyways! Her stomach had shrunk in order to survive off the small meals. Picking up the bits of meat from just her plate, she shuffled back to her corner, simply looking at the meat in her slightly dirty hands. She wished Jacob was here.. He'd tell her the stories papa used to tell when they were a lot younger while they ate. Tears she didn't think she had slowly brimmed in her eyes before placing a few of the pieces into her mouth. But her stomach felt like it tightened up, and Laurelie had to put the meat back onto the plate before she threw up, Clutching her stomach she shuffled to the oppsite wall where she had been, tucking herself against the wall and curling her legs up close. Tightening her eyes, she tried to take deep breaths, leaning herself against the metal that was familiar, but wasn't her cage.
Erik stared at the wall, his forehead resting against the cool metal. He closed his eyes, ignoring the pain that caused his body to occasionally spasm. But he was completely silent, never voicing his pain. That was weakness. He hadn't cried in so long and he wasn't about to start now. His hand clutched his ripped stomach, glaring down at it. Why was it taking so long to heal? The pool of blood just kept growing and growing. Seemed the wounds were deeper than he had originally thought. Sighing silently he didn't move even though his attention moved to the girl. "You're not...hurt, are you?" He asked, voice still emotionless only because he hadn't needed emotions for so long.
Curling her slim arms around her legs, Laurelie shifting her bare feet over one another, cheek pressed against her knee. Her brown eyes peeked open when she was spoken too, looking over to the other young werewolf she was trapped with. "I'm fine," he uttered, sniffling slightly before wiping her damp eyes. "W-why aren't you healing?" She asked softly, looking the injured boy over form a distance to see the damage Jacob had done.
PART TWO CONT.
Erik nodded slightly at her answer, putting more pressure on his stomach, inhaling sharply at the brief spurt of pain. He squeezed his eyes closed until the pain went away. "Scientists...don't want me to heal as fast as I could..." He answered in a slight mumble. "Needles...and a purple liquid..." He added, his back still to the girl, his ankle positively throbbing in pain as he stretched his leg out to keep it from being damaged any more. "Don't worry about your brother." He suddenly said in a quiet voice. He knew the Boss didn't have any surveillance in his cage because he 'trusted' him, so he wasn't worried about that. He didn't want any passer byers overhearing him. "He's still alive. I didn't kill him on purpose." A small frown slid onto her features at his response. The scientists always let her heal, mostly because they knew how weak her body was, and getting too many injuries would kill her, and they wanted her alive for testing. She lowered her gaze, studying the floor. She knew the pain of needles and liquids, so many different liquids. Sometimes they burnt, sometimes they tickled, sometimes they made her cry from pain. Hearing the sudden words about Jacob, he brown eyes jerked up to look at the boy, eyebrows lifting up slightly. H-he was okay? He didn't get killed? Blue wanted to spark up in her eyes until she realized the fact that the scientists probably killed him - or made sure he was dead. That possibility is was kept her eyes brown, and a look of worry slide onto her features. Sucking in a small breath, she crawled over, cautiously, and stopped just a few inches from the other kid. "Thank you," she uttered softly, not caring that there was blood all over. She had seen so much blood since she was a little girl that it didn't matter too much anymore.. besides, she had found out that they made blood really quick, so he'd be okay. Shuffling to the cage wall by the other kid, she curled up a bit, looking to her bare toes. Erik was silent, as usual, but his sensitive hearing kept an image of where she was in his head. When he heard her shuffle over he couldn't help but glance at her. Hearing her soft thank he couldn't help but smile a little. "No problem..." Slowly he shifted until he was leaning against the corner with just his back. That movement left him slightly out of breath, chest heaving a little. His hand moved slightly, revealing the long criss crossing claw marks that scattered all over his stomach. Slowly the blood flow was stopping and the skin coming back together. "That crack you heard..." He paused to take in a quick breath. "That had been my ankle." He explained. Her eyes widened slightly when she saw all the marks along the other kid's stomach, hiding behind her knees slightly. "How.." she paused for a moment, "how'd you break your own ankle?" Laurelie asked, brows lifting up slightly before looking to his ankle. Sure, they healed by themselves, but broken bones usually took longer, and he said they won't let him heal like they naturally do. Shifting slightly, Elie lifted her hands to drag her long hair from her face, combing it back. "...What's your name?" She finally asked, brown eyes looking up to the kid. It was clear she had been crying, with the tip of her nose and cheeks slightly red, eyes still glossy like an upset puppy. She was glad Jacob could be alive, but she was worried. Those scientists still had him, they could kill him.. "I'm Laurelie," she uttered softly before dropping her chin and nose behind her knees, the tattered cloth of her clothes fluttering slightly from her breathing. Erik cracked an almost proud smile and chuckled. "Easy. You twist it and then forcefully slam it against the ground wrong that it snaps." He winced as another twinge shot up his leg from his ankle. "Ah, sounds an awful lot like a neck being snapped huh?" Looking up at the girl with crimson eyes he offered her a small smile. "I'm Erik." He introduced himself as. "Laurelie...that's a pretty name." He mused. He hated seeing females in a place such as this only because they didn't deserve to be here. It was a horrible place that females shouldn't be in. "That sounds hard to do," she said softly. Break your own ankle? It sounded painful, crazy even. But clearly he had been able to do it, and even able to make it sound like Jacob's neck. She felt more at ease knowing that she wasn't in a cage with a kid that killed her brother, but tried just made it.. look that way. "Thanks," she said softly, offering a shy smile. She hadn't ever really met anyone else but her family and the scientists here. "My mom said it was my grandma's name," she shrugged softly, "but I never knew her." Laurelie looked to the door of the cage before shifting back slightly for she could maneuver herself onto laying on her stomach on the hard ground she was used to sleeping on. "Do you stay alone in here all the time?" She asked softly, looking up from where she was laying down now. Erik allowed the smile to grow a little more before letting it drop again as he focused on the door. He was silent, spreading his senses out to see if anyone was nearby. Once he was sure everyone was in their usual place he turned back to Laurelie. "Yeah, I never knew my babushka or dedushka." He murmured. At the next question he nodded. "Yeah, ever since I was uh..." He paused, furrowing his brows in focused thought. "...Four? ...Yeah, that sounds about right." He looked back at her. "Since I was four." He clarified, sounding more certain. She gave him a curious look to the strange words that suddenly rolled off his tongue. "Babuh-shhkah?" She tried, words weird on her tongue as she gave him a quizzical look. It seemed as though the small talk they had was helping her forget about the recent scene of what happened with Jacob, but it was still in the back of her head. "You've been alone since you were four? They've always kept me and Jacob near one another, not always in the same cage, though," she added softly, frowning. Laurelie curled up a bit more, at ease around Erik more now, shifting onto her side. Erik looked at Laurelie carefully, almost critically. Slowly he nodded. "Yeah, ever since I was four..." He looked away, crimson eyes hardening. "It was like that for me as well. Took the bastards a year to get rid of everyone else." His voice was tight, emotions reigned in. Don't cry. Don't cry. Don't think about them, he couldn't think about them. That's what they wanted. He curled his fingers into fists. Mama... Papa... Rey... And Zvezda... All of them just...gone... Laurelie watched him, frowning softly. He was doing what Jacob did, holding back. He always held everything in, she knew he did, but everyone had to let go at some point. Hesitantly, Laurelie shuffled up and forward to the other kid. "Are you okay? Honestly?" She asked gently, reaching over to lay one of her hands on his arm in a sisterly manor, head tilting slightly. Erik twitched a little when Laurelie moved towards him. Feeling something touch his arm he flinched away from it. He looked at her in slightly surprise. "Sorry, not used to anyone uh, touching me." He mumbled, looking away. "But I'm fine." He answered, becoming expressionless again. He had to put those memories away. Once he was out of here then he could mourn properly, but not yet. Not now. When Erik flinched away, Laurelie pulled her hand back as well, at first worried she might have touched a wound, but there was no blood on her fingers. At his words, she let a small frown pull at the edges of her face. She always found comfort when her family touched her, or held her, but she supposed being alone for so long was different. She shuffled back a bit before laying back down on the ground of the cage, curling herself up. "Erik..." she murmured softly, already half asleep. "Why are they trying to 'cure' us I.. I like being a wolf," she uttered, burying her face into her tucked up legs slightly. Now, being a wolf was the only thing she had left. They took her ears away, and now her big, glowing blue eyes were a honey brown. They couldn't take the wolf out of her too, could they? Erik felt bad about flinching away from her, but he couldn't help it. When she moved away he felt even more bad, but shoved the feeling away. He sighed heavily and turned slightly to face her a bit better. But her question caught him off guard. He frowned, looking thoughtful. "Well...because they're scared." He nodded, leaning back against the wall more. "Humans are scared because we're different. Not mention we're dangerous. They're trying yo protect themselves by 'converting' us." He looked away at the door. "But that doesn't make it right..." Laurelie yawned slightly as Erik answered her question, a small frown on her features. "Maybe.. one day.. they won't be scared of us," she uttered softly, eyes fluttering shut. She was tired from the days events, bony body curled up as tight as possible to conserve warmth. "Then, then we can all get along, yeah?" She added before starting to drift off to sleep, slipping towards the nightmares that were sure to haunt her mind now that Jacob wasn't here. Erik tilted his head to look at Laurelie, then frowned. Get along? With Humans? He doubted that would ever happen. Humans were so close minded. Seeing that Laurelie was about to fall asleep he sighed. She looked like she was going to be cold. Mumbling to himself he reached over and gently took hold of her arm then pulled her over to him. He hugged her, being gentle to her, and started to absently pet her hair. He didn't say anything, for there were no need for words. Hopefully they would get out of here soon. Hopefully he could get Laurelie out of this hell. When she got pulled over, her eyes hardly fluttered open, but simply shut once more as she was hugged. Laurelie naturally curled up into Erik's side like she did with her brother, a small yawn breaking her mouth open like a tired puppy. The petting of her hair only aided in drawing her into a deeper sleep. It always felt safe when asleep. Like nothing but the nightmares could get you. It wasn't physically harming, and sometimes it was just peaceful; until those mean men wrenched you away for testing. Erik, who had been stiff the entire time since he hadn't been sure how she was going to react, slowly relaxed and pulled her a little closer. He yawned widely and carefully rested his head against hers. Sleep was calling to him as well. If he slept he'd probably heal faster. So, as he held Laurelie like how he used to hold his younger sister, he gradually fell into a fitful sleep. Far gone in sleep, even her reoccurring nightmares didn't pull her from sleep. There was the occasional shift in her, but she was - for the most part - floating in darkness, the good kind of sleep. Laurelie didn't bother with thinking of what would happen tomorrow. With her whole family gone now.. there wasn't much of a point to caring, was there? She was too weak to fight back. She tried.. but it was pointless, like every shred of hope she once had just got stepped on. Erik woke from his restless sleep after only half an hour. He rarely got sleep anymore, really. It just never worked. Seeing Laurelie still sleeping he kept quiet, not wanting to wake her. He chose to stare at the door, crimson eyes sharp. Scientists would always come in at random times. So he sat there, listening. He just wanted to wait, see if he could spare Laurelie for as long as he could from tests. Laurelie stayed asleep for a while longer, maybe even an hour or two, before she finally stirred the slightest bit. Half asleep and wanting to sleep more, she started humming her mother's lullaby, brown eyes lazily cracked open, still cuddled into Erik's side. In the back of her mind she knew one of those cruel people were going to come and snatch her up. She had memorized when they came, using an 'internal clock'. She was usually right. But right now she just wanted to sleep, so she kept humming the lullaby she knew so well, and the lullaby that helped her through all of this. Erik blinked when Laurelie began to stir. He looked down at her in concern, but was pleasantly surprised to hear a gentle and sweet humming instead. He smiled a little at the soothing tune. After hearing it a few times he decided he should try it out. He swallowed some saliva to wet his throat then began to hum it as well. It was such a pretty and calming lullaby, really. He liked it. He'd be sure to deal with the scientists when they got here. Hearing Erik copying her humming tune, she shifted so she could look up to him, a half awake expression on her face. "That's my mommy's lullaby," she uttered gently, letting a few of the words come along her tongue as well, a sleepy smile on her face. She only froze when she heard the sounds of foot falls, instant fear waking up before one of the men in those long coats came in. "Let's go, Laurelie." He said harshly, frowning at the child. Letting a small whimper leave her lips, she knew better than to refuse. They liked beating if you didn't listen, she found that out the hard way. Laurelie shifted away from Erik's side, starting to crawl over to where the man was crouched down and ready to snag her arm to drag her off again. Erik looked down at Laurelie again when she spoke up. He smiled and chuckled softly. "It's a very beautiful song." He murmured, repeating her words. He stopped and growled when he heard the footsteps. Dammit. When the scientist came in and ordered Laurelie to come he watched her get up obediently. When she was almost there he pushed himself off the floor and wall and stormed forward, grabbing Laurelie's wrist and pulling her behind him. He glared up at the scientist dangerously. "Not today." He growled warningly. Feeling her wrist suddenly get grabbed, her eyes widened in surprise to being pulled back and behind Erik. She peeked out from behind him, scared the man might lash out at them now. "Give me the girl, Erik." The man snapped, opening the cage a bit more so he could situate himself to send his own glare at the kid. Laurelie bit her lip, tugging on the back of his shirt to get his attention. "They'll hurt you," she whimpered, "just.. I- I'll go," she added. She didn't want Erik to get beaten because he tried protecting her. They'd just come back later and drag her off, right? Erik ignored Laurelie at the moment, showing no fear towards the scientist. Instead it was frighteningly calm coolness in his hardened crimson eyes. "No. She needs a break. You can try and take her." Suddenly a cruel and sadistic grin stretched across his face, looking almost insane. "Of course, if you want to hurt the Boss' precious pet by all means go ahead and deal with the consequences, I'd love to hear that you ended up in an electric chair and shocked to death, maybe even explode. Wouldn't that be pretty? All your blood and organs splattered against the wall." He chuckled, sounding off for an eight year old kid. "Of course I can do all of that right now. Want to test my patience, Rick? Don't you have a family? Two daughters and a wife, right? We'd hate for anything to happen to you right now. Isn't your wife pregnant? Oh imagine the pain they'd feel if they found out you were dead and never told why? Oh I can see the heart break now." Erik's grin dropped into a dangerous scowl, red eyes flashing. "Now get out of here." He growled. As Erik started talking, her eyes widened. Electric chair? She heard of those things.. they put papa in one before as torture. Laurelie ducked behind him as he continued on, not sure of what she was hiding from now: the scientist or the scary words leaving Erik's mouth - but he was trying to get the scary man to leave. So, bottom lip pouting slightly, she clung to the back of his shirt, peeking over his shoulder slightly. The man stared at Erik in shock for a few moments, calculating his words before swallowing the small lump in his throat to the child's mental brink. Well.. that was something he didn't want to test. "Fine, fine, let Dr. Keiser come get her," he huffed in return, even though he looked a little thrown off from the child's violent words. He shut the cage and locked it again, lingering for a moment before leaving. "Think he's really going to send Doctor Keiser here?" She asked, brown eyes lingering nervously on the cage door. Keiser was worse than the others, she didn't like him. He was the one who ordered her father to be killed after all, and she was positive it was his fault her mother died too. Erik glared at the scientist, daring him to try something. When the scientist left he released a soft breath of relief. He turned to look at Laurelie with a small frown. "If he does I'll deal with it." He explained, patting her head as if she was the younger one. "Humans are easily manipulated, either with scary words or pretty ones." Wrapping and arm around her shoulder he led her back to the corner. He sat down and pulled her next to him, holding her close. He stared at the door, just waiting. He knew the Boss favored him because he was 'broken' and he knew he could use that to his advantage. And he planned on doing just that to protect Laurelie for as long as he could. "Pretty words?" Laurelie pondered out loud as she was led back to the corner. She could tell what he meant by scary words, but being locked away, she didn't get the whole.. bribery thing. "How do you make words pretty in this place?" She finally asked as she was pulled down, cuddling close to the other kid for comfort. It seemed different in this side of the building. In her side, where her cage was, you never got to stand up. She remembered when her and Jacob tried and they came back with those electric weapons, locking them onto the cage so the metal could run through and get them even when they tried to get away, but it had immobilized both. There wasn't any choice, you either obeyed or got beat, which was why she'd sulk right on over to the scientists out of fear. Erik hummed thoughtfully and tilted his head. "Well...you can make words pretty..." He mumbled, silver brows furrowed in thought. Huh, this was hard to explain. "Well I'll just show you next time okay?" Erik, being brought into this place, had become very manipulative, even gaining the nick name 'Silver Tongued Devil'. But no one ever was really cautious and he could easily control half the staff here. But the boss seemed to be immune. Sure he occasionally fell for some of the things Erik said, but most of the time it didn't go that way. Erik learned and listened and taught himself. He had blackmail on almost everyone thanks to his sensitive hearing.Laurelie nodded, glancing to the cage door for a moment before looking back up to Erik. "Want to play a game?" She asked randomly. It got rather boring sitting in cages all day.. So her and Jacob found ways to amuse themselves. A small smile crept onto her features to the idea, figuring they'd have a bit of time to burn. Maybe Erik would like the games they made up, too! Especially since he had been alone for so long. Only having those mean old scientists as company had to be a drag, and not to mention scary. At least scary to her; this kid didn't seem all too scared of them. Erik blinked when Laurelie asked if he wanted to play a game. He stared at her for a long time. A very long time. "Uh...what's that?" He asked, tilting his head curiously. He'd always been in this dark cage and usually alone, he couldn't remember what a 'game' was. But it seemed to make Laurelie happy, so he nodded anyway. Often he just practiced all of his wolf abilities and combat skills, though he doubted that counted as a 'game'. She just stared right back up at Erik as he seemed to ponder her words, smile still lingering on her face. "What's a game?" She gave him a quizzical look, if not a bit surprised. "You've never played a game before?" She asked before sitting up and crawling over to the bars of the cage. Laurelie leaned out, fingers managing to grab onto the small stones that were littered about the ground. "It'll be fun," she said, going and sitting down in the center of the cage before dropping the handful of stones. "It's simple, but a good way to not be bored," she added before picking up a few stones and hopping to her bare feet, wandering to the cage and looking around for what she'd need. Erik watched Laurelie with curious eyes, hugging his knees close to him, wincing at his still broken ankle. He shook his head slowly, still sifting through memories. "Well, I don't recall any games..." He murmured. He tensed up when she stuck her hand through the bars, ready to protect her if anything happened. But no, she was fine when she came back. Carefully he scooted closer, wincing in pain at the twinging pain in his ankle before he finally stopped near Laurelie. "So what do you do?" He asked curiously. "Hold on, I have to make a circle first," she said, snagging one of the rocks up so she could use it to draw a rough circle onto the ground with the rock. Once she did, she picked up the other rocks and put them in the circle, saving two in her hands. "Its a contest to see who can knock more rocks out," she said, handing a rock to Erik. "You slide your rock into the circle to try and knock out the other rocks - you keep the ones you know out! Whoever has the most at the end wins," she chirped, sitting down on her knees facing the circle of rocks. "Got it?" She asked, head tilting slightly to him. When she didn't have the threat of the scientists coming, Laurelie was a lot like other kids. Not completely, clearly, but enough so that her happy, playful side could spark through. Erik blinked and nodded slowly, watching her with curious eyes. He tilted his head and crossed his good leg, keeping his injured one stretched out. His crimson eyes flickered to and fro as she moved the rocks about. Making the circle, though, hurt his ears as the rock scratched along the hard floor. He shook his head and rubbed his ear at the slightly ringing in his head. Once the ringing stopped he looked at Laurelie as she began to explain the game, nodding along to whatever she said. Seemed simple enough. "Got it." He confirmed, reaching for a free rock. "You go first." He always let the women go first. She nodded before dropping one hand onto the ground, a small smile on her face before sliding the stone along the ground so it bumped into the other rocks, making a few tumble out of the circle. Hopping up after, she snagged her original stone and the three rocks she bumped out of the circle, trotting back and sitting down. "I got three!" She chirped, dropping the rocks by her side. Laurelie sat criss crossed on the floor, an amused smile playing along her lips. "Your turn," she added, tossing her stone around in her hands. Erik watched her intently, putting everything she did to memory. You never know when you might have to use this 'game'. He hummed and nodded when she said it was his turn. Taking his rock he copied what she did, but only got two rock. He frowned, disappointed in himself. "Did I do it right?" He asked unsure, for once. Laurelie watched as Erik took his turn, smile having grown a bit as she felt more at ease. As the rock slid down and hit the others, she nodded. "Yeah! You got two stones!" She chirped, hopping to her feet to collect the two Erik knocked from the circle, bringing them back to him along with his original rock, handing them to him. Since it was her turn again, she crouched down and slid her original rock against the floor to hit out one of the stones (since they were scattered now), getting it to bounce out of the circle. Popping up to her feet again, she scampered over and picked up the rock she knocked out and her original rock. "It gets hard when there's only one stone left," she said, though there were still four stones left scattered in the circle to get. A year had passed and Erik couldn't have been happier. He made sure to take care of Laurelie, managing to get her out of a lot of tests. They had become close over the year, explaining their lives and what had happened. It took months for Erik to finally tell Laurelie what had happened to his family. He still blamed himself for their deaths, especially torn up about his little sister. Now he was pacing in their shared cage. He had a feeling, a gut feeling. His instincts were never wrong and right now something was going to happen. So he paced. And paced. And paced. As the year wore on and Erik felt more like a brother than a friend, the blue of her eyes had returned. It was only around the pupil in her human form, but solid blue as a wolf. It was great to have someone to open up to again, especially in a place like this. The scientists hadn't made a move to separate them either - she always guessed they were just scared of Erik. But hey, she was more than happy to now get to share a cage with the other kid she now thought of as 'family', the only family she had now. Currently, she was laying on her back in the cage, legs up against the bars as she watched Erik pace. At first she didn't want to disturb him, but she was beginning to worry as time wore on and he was still pacing. Screwing her mouth to the side, she dropped her arms out to either side of her skinny body. "Erik.. what's bothering you?" She piped up, eyes following after him as he paced. Erik didn't stop his pacing when Laurelie spoke up. He gave a soft grunt before sighing heavily, running a hand through his long silver hair. "My instincts. They're telling me something is about to happen. But it's...odd. It's not telling me whether it's good or bad." His pacing grew faster, crimson eyes flicking about the room. He kept glancing at the door, as if he was waiting for someone to come barging in. His body was tense and stiff, like always whenever he was nervous or feeling some kind of negative emotion. Something wasn't right.
PART TWO CONT. AGAIN
As he spoke, her eyes still trailed after him, feet shifting on the bars of the cage door. She rolled over to shift onto her knees and rest back against her heels. His instincts were acting up? Everything seemed calm around.. Laurelie tilted her head, looking up to Erik. "You should sit down," she said gently, genuine worry lacing her tone. "Maybe it's nothing big?" She offered, trying to find a way to help ease him from pacing around so quickly. Elie shifted away from the door a bit, his consistent glances to it making her slightly uneasy. Her head turned to the door slightly, now hearing the faint noise of talking with her ears, but she couldn't exactly make out what they were saying. Erik paused and stared at the door for a few moments before resuming his pacing. He could hear the voices, a little more clearly then Laurelie, but he couldn't tell what they were talking about. "No no, I'm fine." He mumbled as he paced. He shook his head when she said maybe it was nothing big. After a few more moments of pacing he suddenly turned to her, crimson eyes narrowed and serious. "If anything happens Laly, stay close to me, okay?" He asked. She looked up from the door, frowning as Erik brushed it off to say he was fine. It didn't seem like it. He had gone right back to pacing, like he was trying to wear a hole into the ground. With a small sigh, she shifted to lean against the bars of their cage until he started to talk again, nodding softly. "Okay.." she uttered gently, pondering what was going to happen. Walking up to the cage, Keiser finally stopped and crouched down, wicked smirk on his features. "Come on, my little Laurelie," he cooed, "we have a few.. final tests." He tapped his fingers impatiently against the bars, waiting for the typically obedient girl to crawl over to the door, but she seemed hesitant. She made a small move to head over before stopping. Erik said if anything happens, to stay close. This was under the umbrella of anything, was it not? Erik nodded when she said okay and continued on this his pacing. He ignored the faint twinges in his ankle as he paced. Hearing footsteps coming towards them Erik stopped, glaring at the cage bars. He growled softly when Boss appeared. Hearing the word 'final' Erik stepped forward. He was shorted than the man, having to tilt his head up to actually look at the man's face. His expression became empty. "She can't." He said monotonously. His crimson eyes narrowed slightly, fingertips twitching. "She's a little under the weather." Laurelie gulped slightly, shuffling slightly on her legs, watching as Erik spoke to Keiser. That man was scary, and mean. She never understood how Erik stood up to the bloke. She'd always cower away from him. Sometimes their little tests went so far Laurelie wouldn't move for a couple days to let her small body catch up to the damage. Frowning at Erik, Keiser shook his head. "That doesn't matter, Erik. Laurelie needs these tests done. I don't care if she's throwing up." He stated sternly before looking to Laurelie. "Come here, Laurelie, now." A small whine came from her, slowly getting to her feet, but only to scamper over and behind Erik and the brother-like safety that came with him. Her slim fingers curled into the cloth of his shirt as an angered look shifted onto Keiser's face. "That's it," the man snarled. "It seems both of you need to be disciplined," more like beat to submission, "get over here." He growled, unlocking the gate and waiting for both of them to obediently come to him. Erik wasn't going to stand for this. He knew exactly what they were planning. He could tell from the way the Boss was standing, his tone of voice, everything. His upper lip twitched, tempted to growl but holding himself back. Feeling Laurelie move he panicked, thinking she was going to go to the Boss, but was relieved when she went behind him. He glared back the Boss and clenched his hands into fists. His body shook slightly as he held back the urge to shift. He listened carefully to the surroundings. Seemed the Boss came relatively alone. This could be used to his advantage. The closest vent entrance was out of the kennels, as the guards called these cages, and down the hall towards the lab. Perfect. He glanced back at Laurelie and gave her a quick wink. He then turned to the Boss. "Fine, but I'm going with her. It's been a while since you've done anything with me." His crimson eyes grew blank again as he worked his Silver Tongued magic. "You can get both out of the way now." Laurelie lowered her chin slightly as Keiser spoke about being disciplined, curling her fingers tighter into Erik's shirt. They were always so harsh. As Erik glanced back to her, she looked up just in time to catch the quick wink, a confused look slipping onto her features. What was he planning? She shifted her eyes back onto Keiser, warily watching the man as she waited for a response to what Erik said, always smooth on his manipulating. He seemed to debate their words, but he'd never had a problem before, so he figured he'd separate them when they got into the laboratory. "So be it.." he stated, frowning as he opened the cage. "Let's go, then," he motioned for them to come out of the cage, waiting impatiently and watching as Laurelie seemed to slink behind Erik a bit more, clearly scared. At least one of them knew their place, he thought, managing a wicked smirk onto his features. Erik nodded and gently tugged Laurelie along. They just had to get to that vent. They were still small enough to fit. With Laurelie behind him he walked out of the cage and waited for the Boss to go. Once he did he followed, looking sadly at all the filled cages of other weres, some children like him and some adults. He sighed quietly and just continued to follow Boss out into the hall. He knew Boss was going to lock the door so he purposely stood right behind him. He kept Laurelie behind him again as one hand grew claws. Once Boss turned around Erik suddenly lunged at him, amazingly jumping high enough to reach the man's head, as his clawed hand scraped down his face. Landing back on the ground her grabbed Laurelie's wrist and ran to where he knew the vent entrance was. "Hurry! We have to be fast!" He called back to her. Laurelie shuffled after Erik, glancing around to the faces she saw whenever she was brought to the lab. They were always the same, hopeless looks as they huddled together, this dreary place able to break even the strongest spirited. Sometimes she wondered if her mother or father ever lost hope like them. Papa always seemed to think there was something better, but she never knew what. Before she knew it, she heard Keiser let out a surprised, pained grunt. The sound made her yelp in surprise, about to jump back herself, but her wrist was snagged, and her legs had to start moving or else she'd fall face-first. It took a moment to get over the initial shock, but she started running after Erik. "W-where are we going?" She asked, glancing over her shoulder to see Keiser getting up and yelling orders to get the kids back. Erik ran fast, heart thumping as adrenaline pumped through his small body. When he saw the vent he released a relieved sound and skidded to a halt in front of it. He gripped the side of it tightly, claws digging into the metal as he pulled with all his strength. He could hear the guards coming, they had to hurry. Finally the vent entrance ripped open and Erik pulled it away. "We're getting out if here. Now go. It's safe in the vent." He motioned for her to crawl into the vent. Eyes flicking about in case of any guards. They were on a very small time limit here. Laurelie managed to keep up, fear driving her small body to keep going as they fled. She let out a strangled sound of surprise as Erik skidded to a stop, having to copy and skid to a stop as fast as she could. Laurelie watched in slight confusion as he ripped the vent off, glancing up in the direction she heard angered shouts before hearing Erik, looking back to him quickly. It was safe in there? "O-okay," she stuttered, quickly going and crawling into the ventilation system, slipping down a bit so Erik would be able to get in too. "C'mon, Erik!" She piped up from the inside, Erik having disappeared from view at the spot she was in, waiting for him to come as well. Erik waited for Laurelie to crawl into the vent. Once she was inside he slipped in as well, placing the vent cover back in place just in time for guards to run by. He held his breath, waiting for all of the running footsteps to pass. Once it was quiet again he released a sigh of relief and managed to turn around. He squeezed by Laurelie and glanced back at her. "Just follow me, and stay quiet." He whispered as he crawled deeper into the ventilation system. He kept his ears trained on any sound that would help them escape. He knew the vents wouldn't lead them directly outside, but if he could get into the guard's control room and shut off all the locks they could go back into the vents and get to an exit and take off. Yes, that would work. Laurelie pressed herself against the metal to let Erik squeeze by before crawling after him. "Alright, Riky," she whispered, silently crawling after Erik. She looked down to her hands as they passed over the odd metal, eyebrows creasing in slightly worry and fear, but Erik said the vents were safe, so they couldn't get them in here. Yeah, that sounded good. Biting her lip, she crept after him, glancing up to the same metal that hung above her head. Her ears twitched, listening to whatever was going on below, but mostly only heard running about. She was trying to find Keiser's voice, to see if he knew where they were or not. She heard his voice faintly, but it sounded like it was going the other way, and relief filtered through her small body as she quietly crawled after Erik. Erik crawled along, occasionally glancing back at Laurelie to check on her. Finally he paused when they came upon a split path. Furrowing his brows he looked at the left path, then the right. Which way should they go? He stayed completely still, listening in on conversations around them. Seemed some guards were running towards the kennels, which was to the right. Left it is. He turned and headed into the left vent. As he crawled he continued listening in on conversations. Everytime they came upon a vent entrance he peered out of it, checking where they were. They seemed to be going to right way. Finally he came upon a vent entrance that seemed to be in the control room. Peering through the small slits he nodded. This was the right room. But there were guards in there. Frowning he counted them carefully. Three, all armed. Biting his lower his mind raced as he tried to think of a plan. Eyeing the door he realized it was locked, the small dial twisted in the locked position. Perfect. He looked back at Laurelie with a serious expression. "Stay here, and stay quiet, no matter what happens. I'll be back." Without another warning he waited for all the guards to be looked away before he popped the vent entrance off. He dropped to the ground silently, putting the vent entrance down. He shifted in his wolf form, prowling and hiding behind desks. Then he leaped, tackling one guard, jaws snapping onto the man's throat in an instant kill. The other guards jumped, startled, and ran around the desk. But Erik had already hidden behind another desk. This went one for the other two guards until Erik was the last on. Picking up one of the heavy guns, standing over the third guard whose throat was split wide open and pouring out blood, he looked up at the control panel. Climbing on top of the desk closest to the vent he cocked the gun and pointed it at the panel. The cracking sound of bullets flying out from a gun echoed in the room as metal burst from the force from the bullets. Electricity sparked as the control panel was ravaged by the bullets. The lights flickered as the panel caught on fire before everything shut down. The lock clicked, signaling it was open. Erik quickly dropped the gun and shifted back to a wolf as he leaped into the vent again. Now to find the exit. As they came to the split in the vent, Laurelie followed Erik, but paused to look down the vent shaft. It seemed so dark down there, but it did seem safe up here, above everyone else. Like no one else knew where they were. She liked it. Almost not noticing Erik had stopped, she had to jolt to a silent stop before accidentally bumping right into him, eyes widening slightly in worry as he turned and told her to stay here and quiet. Her eyes shifted over his face for a moment, but before she could come up with an argument, he was already jumping down. Her eyes widened a bit more, shifting forward to watch for a moment, but shuffling back silently when Erik tackled one of the men, not wanting to see what would happen next. Laurelie scooted back a bit more so she could slowly sit down and cover her ears, too scared to hear what might happen below. It wasn't lock before crackling of a gun hit her ears, squeezed shut eyes widening in horror, at first thinking Erik had gotten shot, but he soon hopped into the vents - in his wolf form - and a look of sheer relief filtered over her features. "Riky," she whimpered quietly, eyes shifting nervously over his form in search of any wounds before shifting back to her hands and knees to crawl again. "What happened?" She whispered, worry filling her eyes. Once inside the shaft Erik shifted back to human form, blood covering him, but it wasn't his own. "I knocked out the power. All doors are unlocked." Already he could hear various shooting as the other prisoners ran to escape. "Just follow me." He led the way again, giving her a small smile to try and calm her down. They crawled on, his ears listening for any indication that they were close to an exit. Any vent entrance he came upon he looked through it. Finally he came upon a ventilation entrance that led into a long hallway, where he could barely see a door with a tiny window. Through the window he could see something green. That had to be an exit! Quickly he popped the entrance off and poked his head out. It was all silent except for the faint sounds of howls and gunshots. Feeling that the coast was clear he jumped down and looked up at Laurelie. "We're here, come down, quickly!" He urged, heart racing and beating against his chest wildly. She looked over all the blood but only caught the scent of human blood, none of the wolf's blood she smelt oh so much, especially back in the kennels after harsh testing days. Her mouth opened to respond, but the sound of shooting made a whine leave her throat, nodding as she quickly scampered after Erik quickly and quietly. Laurelie mimicked Erik in looking out each vent, sometimes wishing she didn't when she saw a shot down werewolf who tried to escape, or even a dead man. When they finally got down to the right entrance, she hung back a bit, assuming it was the same drill, peeking over the edge only to be told to come down. "Okay," she piped up, a slight shake in her words as she shifted to drop from the entrance, landing on her hands and feet. "Are they coming?" She asked, looking down the way they had come from. The sound of gun shots, snarls, screams, it all blurred against her ears, making it hard to concentrate on one sound. Laurelie took a few steps away from the way they had come from the vent, almost wanting to hop back up and hide. She'd never been out of a cage without being locked up somewhere else or one of the guards or nurses with her, and she had definitely never been in this part of the building. Erik gave Laurelie a quick once over, just to make sure she was okay. Then he heard loud footsteps heading towards them. His head snapped up to stare at down the hall where a bunch of guards were running towards them. "Shit." He looked at Laurelie as he moved to block her from sight of the guard. "You need to go. Just turn the handle and run for it. I'll hold them off as long as I can." He ordered, nails already turning into claws. The shouts were getting louder.Hearing the footsteps hitting against the tile, Laurelie let a soft whimper slip from her mouth. She stared at them, shocked in place, before Erik stepped in front of her, and what he said made pure terror slip into her eyes, staring at the other kid she took as a brother. Her brother. And he wanted her to run ahead. "No!" She whined, grabbing his arm and trying to pull him towards the exit. "Riky, I'm not going without you! Y-you have to come! Hurry, please, brother, please," she begged, brown eyes growing in fear for Erik, not wanting to leave without him. They'd hurt him! Or worse, they'd KILL him! She didn't want either of those things to happen! No, no, no, he had to come. Erik looked at Laurelie in surprise when she protested against him. His eyes softened and he gently patted her head. "You have to go Laura, they'd catch us easily. At least I can buy you a little more time." The footsteps were becoming louder and louder. Erik swallowed thickly, nervous. "Please just go, I'll be fine, I promise." He gave her a light push towards the door down a little further from them. The sound of guns being cocked reached his ears and he pushed Laura a little harder. "Go! Now!" Her bottom lip pouted, shaking her head to his words. "I don't want to go without you, please, Riky," she tugged on his shirt, aiming to try and pull him with her until she got lightly pushed towards the door. "Riky!" Her eyes swelled up with tears, unsure even as he gave her a harder push towards the door, telling her to go. "Riky, we can both go, come on!" She sniffled, motionijg him to follow as she took a few steps towards the door. He had to come. He had to. She didn't want to leave him alone with these people! She needed him just as much as he needed her! Her heart was pounding in her chest, trying to tell Erik to come still, glancing to the sounds of guns and boots. They could still make it, together! Erik turned to face Laurelie, expression now turned into a scowl. "I can't! Laurelie they're almost here!" Right when he said that he heard a gunshot. Fiery pain shot through his arm as the bullet skimmed his bicep. Shit! They were here. Shaking his head to will off the pain he practically shoved her to the door. "Go! Dammit Laurelie go and live!" Turning he shifted into a wolf and ran towards the guards despite the bullets being shot towards him. He had to buy her time! He couldn't live with himself if she died! At least the guards were focused on him now since he was running towards them. What he forgot about was the fire slowly consuming the building, getting closer to combusting. "Riky!" She wailed, tears dripping out of her eyes before yelping at the sudden gunshot, her heart sinking when she smelt the blood coming from Erik's arm. She was about to try and drag him again before she was shoved to the door, being told to go again. Laurelie pushed the door open, looking back over her to see Erik running at the guards. She wanted to call after him again, but a guard from the outside jerked the door all the way open. She got pulled along with the door due to her tight grip, staring up at the man in fear. "Come here!" He snapped, reaching down to grab the kid before she dropped down, morphing and fleeing between his legs to the unfamiliar light that burned against her eyes. "Get that pup!" The man yelled, chasing after the thin, white wolf. She yelped at the sight of another man, but they didn't have those guns. One had a net, though, but she just had to run. Laurelie took off, ears flattened as she ran, coming to a fence. What? Her eyes searched it before seeing the men starting to gain on her. Whimpering, she hopped up, small paws getting hooked into the chain link. It was hard, but she managed to get up. The barbed wire at the top ripped into her skin, dripping blood onto the sharp metal before she fell to the hard ground below just as the two guards ran to the fence, smashing into it. She whimpered as one started to climb, sitting in shock for a moment, trying to get her bearings from the gashes on her stomach bleeding onto the ground. The man, however, couldn't get over the pain of the barbed wire, giving Laurelie a break so she could take another moment before shuffling to her feet. The healing process had already kicked in, meaning she'd be fine in an hour, but she had to go, before they got over that fence. A soft whimper left her jaws, hoping Erik was okay. Maybe she could hide, and he'd come running out, too? Laurelie took off towards the large, intimidating buildings, hopping over bins. She slipped a few times, her bloody paw pads making it hard to keep going for too long before she hopped into a small hole in the wall of a building and curled up to hide and let herself heal. Erik would be fine. He'd come back, right? Lifting one paw, she covered her face with it, another small whimper leaving her mouth. Erik weaved in and out of the guard's legs, managing to avoid their clumsy and sharp movements. Finally making it past them with only a few grazed bullet wounds he took off down the hall. He veered right and ran through the halls, trying to find another exit. He skidded to a halt when he smelled smoke. Shit! The fire! Hearing more gunshots he took off away from the fire. But it was everywhere! Bursting into a lab he looked around frantically for a way out. But there was just one door, the one he just came in from, and a high window. Scattered in the lab were spilled chemicals, and Erik couldn't even guess what they did. The flames started licking up the walls. He turned to go back the other way but skidded to a halt. Guards were blocking the way out. "Shoot it!" Pain flared up in his front right paw, causing Erik to yelp and stumble back. Without even thinking he jumped onto the table as more gunshots rang out and leaped to the window. He slammed through the window, glass shattering as he tumbled outside. Panting heavily he scrambled to his paws as he heard pained screaming coming from inside the building. He yelped and fell when he put weight on his pained paw, but instead pushed passed it and took off on his three legs. Suddenly a powerful force slammed into him, throwing him forward like a ragdoll as a loud BOOM came from the lab. His ears rang from the loud sound as he looked behind him, seeing large plumes of black smoke rise into the blue sky as flames danced in the air. He was mesmerized by the sight, finding it oddly beautiful. But the sound of shouting reached him and he shook his head, scrambling to stand and run to the fence. He felt exhausted and in immense pain as he jumped and shakily scaled the fence. He dropped onto the other side and without another thought took off away from the burning lab, away from his prison, and away from horrible memories. As he ran and bled, he vaguely wondered if Laurelie was okay. Laurelie stayed tucked into her little corner, waiting, trying to tell herself her brother would be fine. He'd come running out soon, yeah? He'd be fine. It was Erik after all. But when that explosion hit her head, she cried out, ducking more into her hiding spot. It made her sensitive ears ring with pain, only sticking her head out when it ended. Eyes wide, she shifted from her hiding spot, cut paw pads trotting along to peek out. Seeing the destruction, her eyes stayed glued on it, but there was soon too much smoke to see anything. Thinking the worst, the pup's blue eyes died to become brown again, a whimper leaving her mouth before she stumbled back and took off in a sprint to get away. But all the new sounds and smells were overwhelming. She fled down anywhere that seemed barren, anywhere that looked to be lacking humans. She had to hide. What else could she do? She had no where to go, Erik was.. gone, her parents were gone, Jacob was gone. Everyone was gone, and she was, yet again, terrified. Running down the sidewalk, she cut down a alleyway, jumping onto a fire escape and curling up her small, bloody, dirty form. Her snout dropped against the metal, tears dripping down her snout. [/p]
